Movie Watching

Seen: Pirates of the Carribean 3, and Destination Earth (Jenni's Angels' 48 hour film). One was a tightly put together, funny film with awesome special effects. The other had pirates in it. Actually, they both had awesome special effects - Destination Earth had cool graphic reminiscent (sp?) of Hitchhiker's Guide, whilst Pirates had more than 3 hours of eye-candy. More. Than. Three. Hours. I enjoyed it, but I had a bit of a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when the climactic sea-battle was about to start, and I glanced down at my watch to see that there was a whole hour left to go. I hope the 'director's' cut is shorter than the theatrical cut :) I will rant about the post-credits bit later...

Begin SPOILERIFIC rant:

So, at the end of the film (after the credits) we see Elisabeth Swan, on an island, with her wee son. And Will Turner comes sailing up, and all is happy and lovely.

Except, what has young Liz been doing for 10 years? I mean, she was the frikkin Pirate King, but her 'happy ending' was to get knocked up and become a mother, with a husband who only shows up for a booty call once a decade? Not to find a way to join her husband for eternity on the Dutchman, or to continue a life of piratical awesome. No. We see her all soft-eyed and sensibly dressed, with a wee bairn.

Now, I know there was all that business about passing on being guaranteed, and that having a child is ensuring Will and Liz's legacy will live on, but it all seemed a little un-advneturous, for a pair of swash-buckling adventurers.

Picture, if you will, the same scene, with one minor change:

Island. Near sunset. Subtitle: 10 years later. We hear a young boy singing a pirate song. We hear the sound of oars in the water.

The camera sweeps round to show a rowboat, with Elisabeth, the pirate king, and her son. They are rowing towards the shore, away from her awesome pirate boat. She is holding a chest, inside which is a beating heart.

They reach the shore, and turn to see the sun set and flash green behind her awesome pirate ship. They smile, then see Will heading towards them.

Implication - she's been doing stuff in the last 10 years, other than churning butter and cross-stitch.

Humph.

That ending is pretty haut!

Sounds like we had almost the opposite reaction to the film as I remember going into the final battle and thinking there had only been about 90 mins of movie to that point (the movie flew past for me).

There was a revolting sick person sniffling through the first two hours of the film a couple of rows back from us. Well, they weren't revolting, but the noises they were making were pretty gross.

I got sick of it by the pirate council scene, and ducked out to the candybar to get some tissues. I went back into the theatre, walked up behind them, and quietly dropped the tissues onto the arm of their chair.

By the time I got back to my seat, the snuffling sounds had stopped.

The rest of the film was pretty loud anyway, so the noises wouldn't have been so bad, but I was happy to have helped someone else :)
