Out in the sunny sun shine

I have spent a few minutes taking photos of groups of students out doing filming for Media Studies today. It's a very nice thing to walk about in the sunshine, take pictures, help kids put cameras on tripods, and hear them say things like "These cameras are so cool!"

Shiny cool cameras.

I am very much looking forward to the weekend - this week has been a little tough as Dom's been teething and therefore not sleeping so well. School has been pretty average, but we have managed to go for 3 after school walks along the river which has been fully awesome :-)

3 lessons to go! One of those will mostly be watching Woodstock!

Cross Grazing

Debbie and I have decided to start writing reviews of books, TV shows and movies that we see or read this year. Specifically ones where our opinions differ slightly. We've started up a separate blog that we're both going to contribute to. The inaugural text? Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer.

Here's Debbie's post on Twilight.

And here are my thoughts.

Feel free to leave comments. I'll post links here whenever we post reviews :-)

Revelation

It turns out not being slapped repeatedly in the chest is considerably better, but slightly less cute, than being slapped repeatedly in the chest by a 14 month old. With a little careful repositioning we may be able to convert chest slapping and giggling with double high fiving and giggling, which would be a relief and a cute game.

That said I was laughing for the first couple of minutes as I carried Dom around and he slapped my shoulders and chest while leaning back and sitting on my crossed forearm :-)

Buying video cameras

Did some online shopping for my school this week, looking for video cameras for Media Studies. Ended up getting 10 cameras which is 4 more than we were planning to get (with our small shopping budget). I'd originally wanted to get some nice Panasonic NV GS230's or 330's, but they're a little expensive and hard to come by at the moment (in sufficient numbers). I ended up getting some cheap Canon cameras, with free bags and tripods, for $362 each. Given that the cameras I wanted were around $650 a piece for the camera alone last year that's a pretty good price.

Not as fully featured or nice as the Panasonics, but actually available and we can get enough to have one camera for each 3 person group in a class, which is considerably better than one per two groups!

Sometimes he sleeps...

Wrasslin' with Dom

Dominic is developing some fearsome wrestling skills. He also sees an exhausted, prone parent as a climbing toy rather than a reason to detour...

A tidy desk

I'm back at work, and have been attempting to tidy my desk. I'm around a third done, on account of the fact that I had 3 desks on which to pile paper last year - one in my classroom and two in my office. I'm now sharing my office so I have to relinquish one of my desks. I managed to get that desk completely cleared today.

Tomorrow is a busy teaching day so I don't expect to make a lot of progress with the other two desks but as long as I clear more paper than I generate each day the mess will slowly subside :-)

Tram with Grandma

Yesterday we had an action-packed day with Dom's grandma, getting out for a 45 minute walk in the morning along the Waikanae river and a tram ride in the afternoon, as well as visiting the farmers' market by the beach and stopping for yummy gelato at the Mediterranean Food Warehouse. It was all very cool!

The tram is in Queen Elizabeth park, running from the first carpark to the beach and back. Next time we go we'll probably pack a picnic, get out at the beach and run around, then jump back on for the return ride. This time we went for the ride itself, which was lovely.
