Just saw this on CNN. After about 15 minutes of news on damage control over prisoner abuse in Iraq, they finished with a new segment: Honour Roll of Fallen Heroes or some such thing. Basically, they mentioned that 3 more soldiers had died in Iraq, and proceeded to spend 30 seconds talking about one of them. He'd married his high school sweetheart just after he found out he was going to Iraq (they pushed forward the wedding), and he'd arranged to have a bouquet of flowers sent to her if he got killed while over there. There were glossy photos of the soldier looking very dapper in his uniform, and shots of his hometown and sweet blonde widow.
It seemed slightly incongruous, as the news before about Iraq was quite gritty and explicit. Following it up with glossy, obvious sentimentality didn't quite gel. A sad story to be sure, but it seemed kinda tacky following on from 'real news'.
