This message will self-destruct...

One of Dominic's favourite games at the moment is being lowered down to hover above the ground to pick up objects. To make it more thrilling we hum the Mission Impossible song and give him a short time before lifting him back up.

Dun-dun-dah-dah dun-dun-dun-nah...

Nothing tastes better than to chomp on a small plastic cup snatched in a daring, top secret mission.

1/2 a year old

Far out, Dominic is 6 months old today. Where did the time go?

2 weeks old

6 months old today!

It's Dominic's half a year birthday today. Unfortunately the wretched teething is making him less than cheerful. His main frm of celebrating his new age seems to be to try evading sleep. He tried (rather successfully) to stay up way past his bed time last night and didn't get to sleep until ten past eight! To make matters worse, he then refused to sleep at his usual morning nap time and stayed up for an extra hour and a half being very grumpy and kicky. You have no idea how strong a baby is until they kick you in the stomach/face/random soft and squishy location.

At least now he is reasonably content to sit up slobbering, chewing and drooling on his father's hairbrush while I browse the internet.

A bit of a rant

Today I did something I had never done, or thought I would ever do. I watched about 25 minutes of the Tyra Banks show. This strange event happened because I turned on the TV and was about to start doing a Pilates DVD with Dominic* when he grabbed the DVD remote control and started chewing it. He seemed very happy and unlikely to give the remote up without a fuss so I decided to channel graze the usually incredibly unappetising array of daytime broadcast TV. When I flicked on TV2 Chandra Wilson was just being introduced as the guest by Tyra. Chandra has got to be one of the most awesome actresses on TV at the moment in my opinion so I started watching. For those of you who don’t know, Chandra Wilson plays the fearless Dr Bailey (formerly known as the Nazi) on Grey’s Anatomy. Bailey is probably the best female character on any TV show that I currently watch. She is relentlessly committed and skilled at her job, she stands up to anybody and knows her own mind. She cares about people and ends up helping every other neurotic and generally self-involved character on the show. A truly strong character with a real sense of humanity. Bailey is honest, intelligent, has integrity, a good heart and a sense of humour. While the pretty, skinny female doctors are generally portrayed as ambitious and intelligent which makes them better role models than the women in many other shows, they are constantly being brought down by becoming depressed and pathetic due to the seemingly never-ending and self-made misery of their love lives. It is hard to care about beautiful, smart women who angst about the fact that they are so emotionally screwed-up that they can’t commit or have a successful relationship with the unbelievably hunky, and very patient, world class surgeons who love them. However, when Bailey is upset or suffers, she expresses her pain or troubles but then strives to overcome it and get on with what needs to be done. This makes me sympathetic with her pain a lot more. It was heartbreaking watching her when her baby son was brought into the hospital after an accident, or struggling with the fact the she had to keep operating on a white supremacist who didn’t want to be treated by her when her marriage was falling apart. When she was talking to Dr Shepard about how she had been hurt by the hunky jock who strung her along and used her to do his homework in High School, the infamous ‘McDreamy’ faded away to being mere wallpaper. The character Bailey owns every scene she is in, and you can’t help but respect, admire and like her. Further proof of the awesomeness of this character was shown on last night’s episode when she calmed a panicking patient down by talking to him about Han Solo and revealing an impressive knowledge of the movies and subsequent Star Wars events. My enthusiasm for Dr Bailey is obviously pretty extreme but it just leaves me wondering why there aren’t other great female characters on other shows. Why is it so rare to see a woman on TV portrayed as strong, competent, smart and caring? I know heaps of women in real life who are these things but I struggle to think of TV female characters that aren’t weak-willed, neurotic and incompetent, or if they are competent then they tend to be callous, deceptive, selfish and/or unlikeable. I guess Zoe on Firefly was also very cool but I struggle to think of many others. Anyway, the thing that surprised me on the Tyra Banks show was that she was doing a whole thing about body image and real women feeling proud of their real size because apparently there has been a huge nasty thing in the magazine wolrd declaring that Tyra Banks was fat. WTF?! What definition of fat does Tyra come under? Having some flesh on her skeleton? Craziness. Apparently she now weighs 161 pounds which is 30 something pounds heavier than when she was an 18 year old fashion model, but she is in her thirties and looked to be in amazing shape. It should really just be seen a sign that fashion models are way too underweight rather than an indication that Tyra has been tucking into too many cheeseburgers. Another frightening thing was they had some woman who developed an eating disorder after having a baby. Apparently there is now some trend amongst new mums to get post-natal eating disorders when women can’t cope with the way their body has changed and the difficulty of losing the pregnancy weight. A very disturbing trend. Pregnancy and giving birth seem enough trauma for a body without then putting it through crash dieting. It really bugs me how magazines keep publishing photos of celebrities’ post-baby bodies like it is a competition to see who can get back in shape the fastest. It must be unhealthy for stars who have the resources to get nannies, personal trainers and dieticians to try to lose the weight so quickly, let alone for real world mums who can’t have such things. Just when you think the beauty/thin myth can’t get any worse, the next Child of our Time episode apparently looks at how the media negatively affects 8 year old kids and their attitudes to their own bodies. * Dominic doesn’t do the Pilates but he likes to be held whilst I do standing up exercises, or have tummy time next to/on me when I do floor exercises. I blame Buggy Fit classes. He now wants to be involved in any and all exercises I do.

24 Season One - finished

*No spoilers this time* So we saw the end of the season last night. We might have been able to watch it on Thursday if I hadn't let out a mega-sneeze just as Dominic was falling asleep, startling him into an over-tired awake state. It took us about an hour and a half to get him sleepy again (he thought he'd had a sleep, 'cos he had a lie down and nodded off. He doesn't yet seem to realise that he hasn't had a full sleep if he gets woken up early). I liked the last episode, and most of the penultimate one. It's a good end to the season. So, my recommendation? 24 season one is a very cool show, well worth watching, but beware of some clunky writing from episodes 13 through to about 22. Characters do very stupid things, there are elements that are hard to swallow, and it loses the tightness and drive of the early season. But it all ends satisfyingly, so it's probably worth pushing through to the end of the season. If you're slightly more pressed for time, just watch the first 12 episodes. They are pretty near flawless, IMO.

24 Season One: Ups and downs

So Debbie and I are 3 episodes from the end of 24 season one. We'd never seen any of it, but had been curious, so decided to get the dvd's from the video store and check them out. WARNING - SPOILERS! It's not exactly a new show (they're filming season 7 at the moment) so the spoilers here are probably old news to most of you. Please note that we won't see the end of the season until Saturday, in all likelihood. The First 12 Episodes What a fantastic show! A great premise, lots of tension, interesting characters, clever villains... all the ingredients of several well-made thriller movies rolled into half a season of a TV show. We were hooked, and loved pretty much all of the first half of the season! The difficult mid-season OK, so a lot of shows have a lull in the middle. This show had to change gears, from a rescue-the-family high-pressure chase to more of a solve-the-mystery, investigative mode. This wouldn't have been such a problem if they hadn't shoe-horned new plot set-ups by making several characters do incredibly stupid things. A sampler of stupidity: - lame amnesia subplot - trained federal agent disobeys orders and shoots witness - civilian stabs witness on camera in fit of lover's passion - Jack's daughter Kim develops Stockholm syndrome - Criminal brother of kidnapper refuses to let Kim leave his house because 'he doesn't trust her', so he wants her to stay there so he can go on to talk about and carry out a drug buy? - Jack's boss leaves him alone, at a site identified by his would-be assassin. Fails to send a car for him. Fails to check satellite images of the location. Fails to contact other agencies to find out what's there. The promising, then annoying, late season The major plot developments of episodes 19-21 were cool, and they got Jack into an interesting location and situation. It looked promising for a while - then all the resources of the CTU and DoD appeared to dissolve into plot-convenience, and the bad guys managed to get away from a high security facility by going through a giant, yet unmarked sewer system. There was no aerial surveillance. No satellite surveillance. No roadblocks. Terribly groan inducing. And they took their target, Jack, as a hostage, and shot the warden. Instead of, y'know, the other way around. I just hope the last 3 episodes pay off well.

In da car

Debz took these awesome photos while we were driving to the shops this weekend. Dom is in one of his cool new outfits - a superwarm onesie with polar fleece outer and cotton lining, with ears on the hood and matching booties which button on to the inside of the leg-cuffs with elastic loops.

I wish I had one :-)

The Dominic and Quilt photo shoot

So Talula made Dominic an awesome quilt which she kindly delivered to us today. So guess what happened next? That's right. We took a ridiculous number of photos of him with it. Here are a few:

Dominic and chewy fish on the quilt.

A closer shot of Dom and the quilt.

Dominic stares intently at one of the pictures.

The quilt is also used for exercising. "Look mum, no hands!"

A crafty Dominic decides to treat his snap-happy parents to a game of peek-a-boo as he languishes under the quilt.

Out visitin'

Dominic saw something interesting outside. Probably a branch moving in the wind, but you never know - it could have been a bird, a plane, even Superman. Well, perhaps not a plane...

Visiting parents

Are lovely. They say nice things about Dominic, buy him pressies and clothes, buy us nice dinner, and even do the dishes before they leave. They make occasional comments about the shocking state of the lawn (over a foot high in places!), but that's none too surprising. I weakly protested that I had mown part of the lawn within the last 2 weeks. I even pointed out which bit - it still looks good :-) There's also a patch of short grass between the front door and the driveway, worn down by 2 pairs of feet and stroller wheels. I promise I will mow the lawn soon. Where soon = sun + motivation + time combo.

Dominic and the cat

Recently Dominic has become quite obsessed with the cat, and she is surprisingly tolerant of his attentions. If she's sitting on the sofa or nearby she lets him stroke her, and has even licked his hand a couple of times. Remarkably, she doesn't bite him even when he grabs a handful of her fur!

We even got footage today of Dominic attempting to lure the cat to him with his sweet siren-like call. OK, actually he just yells some baby grunts at her and as cat-cam shows, it is not entirely successful. The bumps in the footage are from Austie rubbing her head against the camera.

Ridiculous Early Start

Hmm. I seem to have been awake for three hours already, and it's only 7.15am. Today is going to be a long day. Dom was up early, and I needed to have a shave before heading back to bed when he went back to sleep. After my shave, I found that I was fairly awake, and Dom stirred when I went to sneak back into the bedroom anyway. So I decided to do some work and read internets instead of going back to sleep. I am currently editing the Friday night show of my school's major production, which was a Shakespearean play this year (Midsummer Night's Dream). It's not too hard in Premier Pro 2, what with the multicam function - capture all the footage, sync up the the different cameras, then open a multi-cam monitor and watch the show in real time, clicking on little preview windows of each camera's footage to cut between. I'll occasionally let a really bad zoom or wobble through, and have to stop, go back, and redo a section, but I think it's about a 4 hour job per show? Which isn't too bad. Live editing would be nice in some ways, but it would mean I'd have to anticipate when to cut, and I'd need reliable camera operators. Given the lack of gear and lack of steady hands, I think post-show editing yields a better result. Anyways, I should probably eat breakfast soon, maybe do a few dishes or something useful like that. I think today is a yukky no-breaks day (meaning I have to run detention at lunch time) so I can't come home for lunch/visiting, so I'd better make myself some sandwiches too. Most. Exciting. Blogpost. Evah!

More fun with food

After many days of chowing down on the pureed fruit, Dominic has moved onto trying out some veggies. First was kumara, which he loved, however, the results were somewhat more messy.

After liberally coating his face and bib with a couple of spoonfuls (OK, he did actually swallow some of it as well, it just looked like he was trying to apply it as a face mask), Dominic decided he might go straight for the source of the kumara rather than waiting for spoonfuls.

Much mess and fun was had.

Dominic seems to be becoming more confident with eating these days. He even smacks his gums together in a chewing-like motion despite not having any teeth. However, he has also decided that he should be entitled to try to have anything that I'm eating or drinking. Recently he has tried to take a piece of toast off me as well as grabbing at any cups I have. I'm reduced to quickly guzzling hot drinks and food when he's asleep or Matt is around as it is the only time when I can safely chow down without a baby trying to seize my snacks.

Of course he is not all about the taking. He has decided to start trying to shove things in my mouth as well to be fair and share. I have had his chewy fish toy rammed in my mouth a couple of times and he is quite keen on making sure his mum or dad eat and/or wear whatever food he is eating.

Early morning smiles

Dominic is still waking up early - around 5am. He's a happy wee chap in the early morning, which is very cool. He usually lets us know he's awake by doing pushups and making straining noises, rather than crying or complaining :-)

Hospital funding

Today we went to Kenepuru Hospital for an appointment for the wee man. The result was positive, in that Dom is very healthy, but confusing, in that the doctor wasn't really sure whether the risks of surgery outweighed the benefits (in terms of reducing risk of future complications). We have another appointment with the specialist next month, so we'll ask a bunch of probing questions then.

We were both horrified, it must be said, at the dilapidated condition of some of the hospital resources. The buildings, grounds, medical equipment and decor were all excellent - not quite American TV flash, but clean, newish looking, and in good repair. The waiting room, however, featured this shocking textbook filled with horrific animal accidents:

See the malformed maw of the king of the jungle!

The terrifying headless giraffe!

Caesarean gone wrong? Marsupial pouchless roo!

His nose is out of joint! What accident befell this poor croc?

See the snake's body? What body? Dear God, the head is still alive!

Should our hospitals really have such reading material available to children? Can we not find a few extra dollars in the budget for books about healthy animals? Or has this book been planted by the NZ Veterinary Society to get kids interested in helping animals...?

Weekend of drawing

Debbie and I did a lot of drawing this weekend. It kinda looked like the JA 48 Hour Film team might use some drawings of mine to start their film, so Debbie storyboarded, I drew, and Debbie colourised (whilst juggling a lovely baby between us) for many hours. The team decided to go another way in the end, but we still have the pictures :-) And I drew a dinosaur today - it was kind of what I had in mind to draw yesterday before being assigned the start of the film. It was being punched by a superhero, but I cropped it down to just the dino as it was by far the star of the picture :-) So, here's lots of pics:

5 month jabs

This week has been a little disrupted by Dom's 5 month jabs. He hasn't reacted too badly, but he's been a little out of sorts, and definitely had a bad night's sleep on the day he was stabbed in the thighs. It's amazing how quickly he recovered after he was injected, given how understandably upset he was by the process. I think he cried for about 2 minutes? Then was smiley and happy again (and very clingy).

The 48 hour film contest is on this weekend, and while we'd love to be involved I don't think Dom is up for too much activity this weekend (and I'm pretty shattered too). I think we'll try to make it down to visit the JA team, probably on Sunday, but may not even manage that. We shall see - it would be cool to catch up with people and see what the team's up to :-)
